A good friend of mine once told me she does everything during the week. She will do laundry, grocery shopping Wednesday and Thursday that way she has the whole week-end to relax and enjoy her family. I tried that and it's seems to be working out fine for me.

Gabon President Omar Bongo dead: France

PARIS (AFP) — Gabon President Omar Bongo Ondimba, Africa's longest serving leader, has died aged 73 in a Spanish clinic, a French government source said Sunday.

Bongo, who has led the former French colony in west Africa since 1967, had officially been in a clinic in Barcelona for a check-up but several sources said he was being treated for cancer.

"He was a great figure of Africa," a "man who had influence," French Defence Minister Herve Morin told French television.

There was no official confirmation late Sunday from either Gabon or from the French government that Bongo was dead.

Bongo came to power in 1967 with French support and with Paris' blessing has ever since ruled over a one-party state that grew rich on abundant oil reserves while most of the 1.5 million population remain impoverished.

Bongo's last months were marked by a row with Paris over a French public television report on luxury properties he had bought and claims by anti-corruption activists that they were acquired with embezzled state funds.

A French court decision in February to freeze Bongo's bank accounts added fuel to the fire and Bongo's government accused France of waging a "campaign to destabilise" the African nation.

Gabon had also been angered by French media coverage of the hospitalisation of its president, accusing French satellite broadcasters of reporting "non-official and alarmist" information on Bongo's condition.

Bongo had announced on May 6 that he was temporarily suspending his duties in order to rest and mourn the death in March of his 45-year-old wife Edith Lucie Bongo Ondimba.

His wife, who was the daughter of Congo President Nguesso, died in Morocco in March after a long illness.

Selon des informations des proches,la chanteuse de « Chouchou », « Konkaï » et bien d’autres titres à succès, qui ont fait vibrer toute l’Afrique,était internée dans un état grave, au CHU Kremlin-Bicêtre situé dans le Val-de-Marne, après son transfert d'un hôpital en Irlande du Nord où elle résidait depuis plus d’une décennie maintenant.

Charlotte Mbango serait décédée ce jour des suites d'une maladie cardiovasculaire.

Chanteuse dans une chorale à 9 ans puis membre des "Negro Spirituals" de Paris en 1979, Charlotte Mbango est influencée par Lynda Ronstadt, Mary Mc Gregor et Dolly Parton. "Nostalgie" fera d’elle une grande voix du Makossa en 1987

Charlotte Mbango, dont les albums ont été de véritable régal en matière de makossa pur, très dansant, ces dernières années, avait changé de cap en mettant dans le marché discographique un album constitué de musique religieuse.

Arrivée, dans le paysage musical en 1987, Charlotte Mbango a marqué cette époque en faisant, de sa belle voix, le bonheur du “Makossa”. Les titres comme Konkaï Makossa, Adou restent les témoins de son succès.

En plus de 22 années de carrière, la chanteuse avait réalisé six albums, des featurings et un “best of”. Comme une femme presque parfaite  Charlotte Mbango savait être sobre et très modeste et mettait un point d’honneur à parfaire tout ce qu’elle entreprenait nous confie Charles Emengué, artiste congolais à Bruxelles. 48 heures après le bruyant départ d’Otto Pfister, Roger Milla est monté au créneau. Dans une interview accordée au quotidien gouvernemental Cameroon Tribune le célèbre attaquant des lions indomptables des années 70 et 80 jette des pistes pour sortir du piège marocain. L'ambassadeur itinérant a aussi expliqué qu’il se trouvait à l’immeuble abritant le siège de la télévision nationale à Yaoundé.

Milla analyse d'abord la démission du sélectionneur qu’il ne portait pas forcément à cœur: ‘’Il (Otto Pfister ndlr) a peut-être trouvé qu’il ne pouvait pas conduire l’équipe à la qualification. Le Cameroun avait certes fait une bonne Can en 2008 mais il ne peut pas revendiquer ce parcours. Beaucoup de choses s’étaient passées au Ghana, notamment au moment de faire la composition de l’équipe…’’

L’ancien lion tient ensuite  à apporter une certaine clarification : ‘’Je n’ai jamais été associé à la procédure d’un recrutement d’un entraîneur au Cameroun. Avant qu’Otto Pfister ne soit nommé, on m’avait demandé un nom. J’avais alors proposé le Belge Jean Thiessen, actuel entraîneur du Togo que je connais bien’’.

Quant à la suite réservée au stage des lions ainsi qu’aux deux prochaines sorties des lions, Milla à sa petite idée : ‘’Personnellement, je pense qu’il faut laisser les trois entraîneurs gérer le match du 7 juin, et peut être celui du 20 juin. Akono, Kaham et Ndtoungou ont fait leurs preuves. Après, tout dépendra du ministère des Sports et de l’Education physique et de la fédération. Les entraîneurs peuvent décider de convoquer d’autres joueurs si cela s’avère nécessaire. L’objectif étant d’aligner 18 joueurs compétitifs sur la feuille de match le 7 juin’’.

S’il n’est pas surpris par la démission d’Otto Pfister, Milla appelle Song Bahanag et ses équipiers à prendre leur responsabilité. Il fait également un clin d’œil au champion d’Europe, Samuel Eto’o.

Milla déclare: ‘’Même sans entraîneur, les Lions doivent jouer et gagner le 7 juin. Ils doivent prendre leurs responsabilités parce que le pays tout entier compte sur eux. Il faudrait une discipline de fer au sein de l’équipe. Le jour du match, il faudra marquer beaucoup de buts. Les joueurs doivent jouer pour l’équipe. Personnellement, je suis confiant. Il faut qu’ils mouillent le maillot. Après la finale de la Ligue des champions, mercredi dernier, ma confiance s’est encore renforcée avec la belle prestation de Samuel Eto’o Fils. S’il reste sur ce registre-là, il serait le meilleur avant-centre au monde’’.

Pfister resigns as Cameroon coach 
 
There is confusion over the future of Otto Pfister as Cameroon coach
Otto Pfister has resigned as coach of Cameroon, just a week before their next match.

He left the squad rather than join them at a training camp in Belgium.

The Indomitable Lions are preparing for next month's 2010 World and Nations Cup qualifiers at home to Morocco and then in Gabon.

The BBC has learnt that as the squad arrived in Belgium, Pfister decided to continue his journey elsewhere.

He handed a letter of resignation to representatives of Fecafoot, the Cameroon Football Federation.

The German coach did not explain his decision and has left the squad in a state of confusion.

The BBC has not been able to contact the coach for a comment, but Fecafoot recently appointed a team of three coaches to work with him.

That followed Cameroon's defeat in their opening game in the final round of World Cup qualifying when they went down to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Pfister's former team Togo.

Pfister was a controversial appointment when he took over Cameroon, with several high-profile names and Fecafoot itself unhappy with the move.

It was forced through by the government.

Le célèbre saxophoniste a séjourné à Yaoundé après le concert donné à Evreux le 5 mai dernier.

ImageComment vivez-vous l’embarras des musiciens qui ne savent plus où se trouvent leurs droits d’auteur ?
Ça, c’est des problèmes qu’il faut poser localement.
J’ai quitté cette histoire il y a trois ou quatre ans. Je ne veux plus en entendre parler. Parce qu’il y a des gens qui s’occupent de ça. Quant à moi, mon problème est de donner une image positive de mon pays à l’étranger. Je m’évertue par mes actes à le faire. A d’autres de s’occuper de cela. Il y a beaucoup d’artistes, des techniciens et j’espère qu’un jour ou l’autre ils trouveront la solution. Quand vous voyez des initiatives comme Mango Tree, qui sont aussi jeunes et qui s’organisent et qui arrivent à nous faire venir ici pour des problèmes de santé qui concernent tout le monde, il ne tient qu’aux autres de s’organiser comme ça. Mango Tree est une organisation qui a l’air de tourner et ce sont des Camerounais. Que des gens prennent des exemples sur des choses qui sont positives et non sur des choses qui font descendre tout le monde plus bas que la ceinture (rires).
 
Sur quel projet travaillez-vous actuellement en matière de rayonnement de l’image du Cameroun à l’étranger ?
Vous savez, chaque fois que je fais un concert à l’étranger, c’est l’image de mon pays que je fais rayonner. Je fais beaucoup de concerts. Le dernier a eu lieu il y a juste trois jours à Evreux (5 mai 2009, ndlr). Bientôt, je rentre à Paris pour d’autres concerts. Si vous cliquez sur mon site, vous verrez le nombre de concerts que je donne. J’ai un très beau site Internet. Vous n’avez qu’à cliquer dessus pour voir le nombre de choses que je fais en dehors d’ici.

Vous avez un projet avec André-Marie Talla. De quoi s’agit-il ?
Au mois d’août, nous allons faire un truc ensemble. Vous verrez le moment venu. J’aime bien ce genre de collaboration qui nous permet de nous mettre ensemble pour faire des choses positives. Tant qu’on a la santé. C’est pour cela qu’il faut saluer les jeunes de Mango Tree. Ils ont pris le taureau par les cornes. On peut le faire de plusieurs manières et faire venir des gens connus pour qu’ils servent de caisse de résonance. C’est nous qui battons le tam-tam pour cette histoire-là. Voilà le côté positif de ce que les jeunes peuvent faire ici.

Manu Dibango se préoccupe-t-il de la formation des jeunes à l’art musical ?
Mon chef d’orchestre est Camerounais. J’ai eu plein de Camerounais dans mes orchestres et tous ces gens-là ont réussi. Je le dis toujours et j’espère que c’est la dernière fois, j’ai une école qui ne dit pas son nom, mon orchestre est une école : les jeunes arrivent, je les présente aux gens, ils font leurs preuves et puis s’en vont. D’autres viennent à leur tour. Tous les musiciens que j’ai dans mon orchestre, ce n’est pas moi qui les ai formés.  Ce sont les autres musiciens qui me les ont emmenés. Quand André Manga est parti, on m’a emmené quelqu’un d’autres. Les frères Sabal Lecco ont chanté chez moi, les Richard Bona, Etienne Mbappe, ce ne sont pas des petits… Je peux en citer beaucoup.

Pourquoi n’y a-t-il pas de conservatoire Manu Dibango à ce jour ?
Ecoutez, il y a suffisamment de monde. Je ne suis pas seul. Moi, quand je suis arrivé au Cameroun le 6 janvier 1963, j’avais posé ce problème de conservatoire à radio Douala. A cette époque-là, il y avait Odile Black ici et Jacques Moudiki là-bas. Il y avait Mpoual qui était technicien. Les premiers qui étaient sortis des écoles en France. J’avais posé ce problème en 1963 et nous sommes en 2009. Mettez les Camerounais en face à leurs problèmes.

 PARIS, May 7 (Reuters) - France's public prosecution office appealed on Thursday against a magistrate's decision to launch an investigation into corruption allegations levelled against three African presidents and their relatives.

The prosecutors' office answers to the justice ministry and has always opposed the probe, raising accusations that the French government wanted to avoid upsetting the oil-producing states -- Gabon, Congo Republic and Equatorial Guinea.

"The appeal has been presented," said Jean-Claude Marin, a member of the Paris prosecutor's office.

A magistrate, who is independent from government, opened the probe earlier this week into whether the three presidents had used embezzled funds to buy luxury homes and cars in France.

Omar Bongo of Gabon, Denis Sassou-Nguesso of Congo and Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea deny any wrongdoing. The appeal will block the probe and is likely to take around six months to hear.

The case against the African trio was initiated by the French arm of Transparency International, an independent anti-graft watchdog. It had urged the French government to let the investigation continue, seeing it as an important test case.

Presidents Bongo and Sassou-Nguesso are France's oldest and closest allies in Africa.

French group Total is the leading oil producer in the two countries and many other French firms, public and private, have long-term contracts in the two former colonies.

Geologist Discovers Diamond Deposits

A Korean geologist has recently discovered massive diamond deposits in Cameroon, central Africa. The discovery draws particular attention as the reserves in the areas of Mobilong and Limokoali are presumed to reach 736 million carats, equivalent to five times the world's annual total diamond production.

Kim Won-sa, 55, professor at Chungnam University, embarked on the exploration from January last year at the request of C&K Mining, a joint-venture firm between Korea and Cameroon. Kim reported the exploration result to the Cameroon government last month, which pledged full cooperation for the project.

Kim plans to meet with Cameroonian President Paul Biya early next month to discuss ways of promoting mines development in the African nation. He will also focus on means to expedite resources exchanges and cooperation between the two countries.

Kim and the C&K Mining also held a briefing session at the Intercontinental Hotel, Monday, with some 200 experts, officials and businesspeople attending. Cameroon's Minister of Industry, Mines and Technological Development Badel Ndanga Ndinga was also present along with a group of Cameroonian officials.

The minister expressed hope that the diamond mines development will facilitate efforts to alleviate poverty in the African nation while promoting economic exchange between Korea and Cameroon.

``With open arms we welcome Korean companies investing Cameroon,'' he said. He said Korean companies will have many business chances as the African nation is replete with natural resources like crude oil, natural gas, steel, uranium and wood, as well as diamonds.

The possible advancement of Korean companies into Cameroon is also expected to help promote the Korean government's pursuit of ``resources diplomacy.'' The Cameroonian minister visited with Minister of Knowledge and Economy Lee Youn-ho yesterday to discuss ways of speeding up bilateral trade and investment relations.

Kim said the production will begin from 2009 in full swing with the annual exploration of 6,000,000 carats and with the effect of generating 4,000 jobs in Cameroon.

C&K plans to bring in rough diamonds into Korea for cutting to meet domestic demands. ``We will also be able to export diamonds and expect promotion of domestic jewelry markets to a great extent,'' he told The Korea Times.

Kim has engaged in brisk research and exploration activities including his discovery of titanium deposits in Hadong, South Gyeongsang Province in 1997. He was cited as one of the ``Outstanding Scientists of 20th Century'' by the International Biographical Center, Cambridge, United Kingdom, and has already been named for the 21st Century group.
